My first illustration campaign with my art agent was an honor to be a part of...
I had an amazing opportunity back in February to work on an illustration campaign for BMH Health 4 Equity, alongside a talented group of fellow black female illustrators. BMH developed this campaign to raise awareness about the disparities and low quality of care that some black pregnant women face within the healthcare industry.
The campaign, sponsored by Southwest, aimed to share authentic experiences of pregnant women through beautifully written poems by author Yvette Perry. The main feature of this project was how we brought each story to life through an incredibly animated zine and spoken words by the author.
Before diving into the project, I had the chance to select from a collection of poems and one stood out to me the most – “38 Weeks.” The lines of this poem played like little movie scenes in my mind, and I was inspired to sketch out six illustrations that visually expressed the emotions conveyed in the poem.
I am deeply grateful for this opportunity and for the chance to contribute my art to such a meaningful cause. Head over to RUCKUS.org to watch the full zine and help spread awareness of Health Equity for Black Maternal Healthcare.
Stay tuned, I plan to share more inside looks at my process for the BMH project. If you’re a woman of color and feel you can relate to the poems based on other women’s experiences. I would love to hear about your story down below in the comments!
At the same time, feel free to share this post with others. Let’s continue spreading awareness and keep the conversation going!
